Around the shore

🚗 Saugeen Shores Council endorsed a resolution asking the province to create standardized ride-sharing regulations, instead of municipally regulated. Council also wants staff to investigate how the town's regulations impact smaller ride-share startups, as the current patchwork of rules hinders companies' expansion into rural areas.

🏊‍♂️ The opening of Saugeen Shores' $50 million Aquatics & Wellness Centre has been delayed again, likely until October 2025. A progress report detailing the latest delay was pulled from a recent council meeting agenda for additional information. Issues like redesigning footings, coordinating steel requirements, and staffing needs contributed to the postponement.

🏖️ Ontario's appeal court will hear appeals from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, and Canada regarding a judge's decision recognizing that Saugeen First Nation owns most of Sauble Beach's north beach. The appeals seek clarification on issues like the reserve's eastern boundary and request the judgment be set aside.

Mayor urges prioritizing fiber optics for Saugeen Shores future

Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau recently sent this letter to Michael Lindsay, President and Chief Executive Officer, Infrastructure Ontario

Dear Mr. Lindsay,

I have recently learned that, as part of the Accelerated High-Speed Internet Program (AHSIP), a large segment of our community is slated to be served with wireless infrastructure instead of fiber optics.

I am writing to express my strong support for prioritizing fiber optic infrastructure within the entire boundary area of the Town of Saugeen Shores.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Ontario, your decisions significantly impact our community’s well-being, and I believe that opting for fiber optics is crucial for our residents’ future.
